2.3. CAMERA INSTALLATION

The camera installation is a decisive step as detection and localisation performance will be directly impacted.

General constraints

The camera must:

  • Be clean (no dust or fingerprint on the camera lens)

  • Be strongly fixed to the vehicle structure,

  • Have a clear field of view (be carefull ofthe vehicle moving parts (forks, chaines) and static parts as mast, cables),

  • Take into account the 140° horizontal, 70° vertical field of view,

  • Take into consideration the height when determinating the pitch angle  (except if there is an obstacle hidering visibility),

  • Have no roll angle.

Mounting Kit

To install your camera you can use the:

  • standard mounting kit provided with your camera,

  • optional "pro installation kit"

  • optional  "premium installation kit"

Installation Steps

Find the best location

What position on the vehicle?

The camera must be fixed on a non-moving part of the vehicle. Idealy the camera is centered on the vehicle but most importantly, the field of view needs to be clear.

In case of an obstacle in the field of view ( mast, counterweight on a forklift) the camera can be positioned outside the center of the vehicle.

How high on the vehicle?

Height installation

ℹ️ For optimal detection performance, install the camera at a height between 1m and 3.2 m

What happen upper than 3.2 meters?

Installation upper than 3.2 meters are possible as the system works properly but the system performance are not fully caracterized. As a result the installation can not be characterized in a general way but in a specific way.

You can contact Blaxtair Team to ensure that the installation provide nominal performances

Note for Blaxtair team (not visible on the customer doc)

The question that needs to be ask to the customer that ask for an installation upper than 3,2m:

  • if the customer is an OEM, it must be ensured that:

    • the set-back is at least 1 meter,

    • the angle does not exceed 35°,

    • there are no vehicle ego in the field of view,

    • send the SNs to the AI team

  • otherwise, ok for the installation as we think that in general it should work fine

Find the best angle

At this point, you will need to adjust camera's orientation.

What Roll angle?

Roll angles must remain 0°.

What Yaw angle?

Most of the time the yaw angle must remain to 0° but if the position is too off-centre, the yaw angle can allow the camera field of view to focus on the area of security.

What Pitch angle?

Pitch angle depend on the height and the field of view.

  • If the field of view is clear, the angle of the camera maximizing the performances of the camera is:

Height (m)

Range angle (°)

Low angle

High angle

  • If following above angle recommendation, an obstacle is in the field of view of the camera, the camera angle needs to be as close as possible to the range on the table but avoiding the obstacle:

Obstacles on the camera field of view should be avoided as much as possible:
